My kids are on a year-round school schedule. There are pros and cons to this type of calender. One of the cons in my opinion is it often makes more work for me in the kitchen, trying to decide what to feed everyone three times a day. I can repeat things more often when its just the little ones at home but the bigger kids like more variety.
On their most recent break, it happened to be a day when my oldest got to go to school for the district gifted and talented program. It was lunch time, but we were out of bread. I had a lot of other choices in the fridge, however, and the wheels in my mind started turning. I cut up apples, kiwis, and cheese, rolled up ham and turkey slices, and added carrots. I had colored toothpicks in the cupboard so I filled a ramekin with them and gave each girl a plate. They were delighted and ate almost everything I had cut up.

We do this all the time! We even have a fancy name - "Snack Tray". Okay, not so fancy...but it is my four year olds favorite, and most often asked for lunch.
